Junior Olympic Qualification Slalom

Although the Saturday was 65 and sunny for the practice and team races, the
weather turned sour at 55 degrees and rainy, at times heavy. But all had a great
time on a technically difficult course for a Class II slalom.
Reedsville, PA - Local Paddlers from Centre County earned first places in four
of the six major classes at the 7th running of the Kish Kayak and Canoe Slalom.
Rachel Thomas of Boalsburg won the women's cadet kayak class,
Marshall Anderson of State College won the junior singles canoe class, Jon
Nelson of State College won the master's kayak class, and the doubles team of
Rachel Thomas and brother Ben won the doubles canoe class.
In a driving rain Rachel Thomas scored a 136 second better of two runs on the
20-gate course to win the women's cadet kayak class. Commenting on her score,
Coach Dave Kurtz of the Mach One Slalom Team said, "Rachel, at 13 years old is a
dedicated paddler, highly focused on doing well. This is her last year as a
cadet and she is trying to make it a top-flight success."
Anderson won the junior singles canoe class in 122 seconds. He bested team mates
Daniel Phillips of State College who scored a 154 second run and AJ Chapman of
Boalsburg who was third in 160 seconds. Anderson won the US Cup
in singles canoe two years ago with competitions held in Colorado and last fall
won the Penn Cup in kayak.
The junior doubles canoe team of Rachel and Ben Thomas, her older brother, won
the doubles canoe class in 207 seconds. Taking second place in that class and
running as an open C-2 team, Danny Warner of Bellefonte and Dave
Kurtz of State College achieved a score of 236 seconds. Phillip Wigfield and
Martin Greenberg, both of State College were third with a 536 score. The
Wigfield-Greenberg team is a cadet-age team.
Nelson scored a 130 second run to outlast Dave Kurtz of State College who was
second in 140 seconds. Bill Torretti of Boalsburg was third in 234 seconds.
Danny Warner of Bellefonte scored a run of 157 seconds to take second place in
the cadet kayak class. Willy Dickerson of College Park, MD won the class in 140
seconds. Third was taken by Phillip Wigfield in 162 seconds. Martin
Greenberg of State College took fourth in 230 seconds.
Jeff Gette of Philipsburg was second in the junior kayak class in 116 seconds to
team mate and friend Rick Powell of Parkesburg, PA who scored 112 seconds. Joey
Warner of Bellefonte was fourth in 133 seconds. Dan
Phillips and Ben Thomas were fifth and sixth in 137 and 161 seconds,
respectively.
Rounding out the results Kathy Phillips of Sate College, Dan's mother, won the
recreational women's kayak class in 234 seconds. Jon Nelson won the men's
recreational kayak class in 141 seconds.
The Kish slalom was sponsored and run by the Mach One Slalom Team of Centre
County. The slalom was also a qualification slalom for the 2004 Junior Olympics.
The following paddlers earned qualification to race at the Junior
Olympics with will be held July 10 in South Bend, Indiana:
In Cadet Kayak those earning qualified status were Danny Warner,
Phillip Wigfield, and Martin Greenberg.
In Junior Kayak those earning such status
were Jeff Gette, Joey Warner, and Dan Phillips. Phillips, however,
in
deference to already having a place in singles canoe, gave up this slot in favor
of Ben Thomas, who will now race in Junior Kayak at the Junior Olympics.
Rachel Thomas earned a sport in Women's Cadet Kayak.
Marshall Anderson, Daniel Phillips and AJ Chapman earned
spots in the Junior Canoe classification.
Rachel Thomas & Ben Thomas earned a slot in junior doubles
canoe and Phillip Wigfield & Martin Greenberg earned a spot in
Cadet Doubles Canoe.
The local Mach One Slalom Team thus earned 13 slots for the 2004 Junior
Olympics.
