Junior Olympics at East Race

Youngsters from eight qualifying races held around the country will compete in this year's Slalom Junior Olympic Championships at the East Race in South Bend on July 10.

There will be races for Juniors ages 15-18 and Cadets ages 11-14 in K-1 (boys kayak), K-1-W (girls kayak), C-1 (boys solo canoe) and C-2 (a two-person canoe paddled by two boys or two girls or one of each).

Atlanta, whose youngsters won three of four races at the recent U.S. Junior Team Trials, is favored to cop the 2004 Junior Olympic club crown.

Other clubs to watch are Nantahala, N.C.; Bethesda, Md.; Durango and Front Range, both from Colorado; Valley Mill, Md.; Mach One of Pennsylvania and the Kern River Kayak Kids from California.

No Midwestern team is expected to challenge for the club crown, but several outstanding individuals will advance to the Championships at South Bend from the Midwest Qualifier being conducted at Wausau, WI, in late June.
